Turning the Tables
I've heard members of an audience say, "I didn't like that comedian. I thought he was rude." Or, "He was annoying. I hated him. He wasn't funny."

Does an audience ever think to themselves, "We sucked tonight. We didn't pay attention, and we were loud and interrupted the comedian with heckles. We had too much to drink and didn't respect the other people who were trying to enjoy the show."

I just wonder if audiences ever think that.

I'm thinking that it is never an entire audience that sucks, just individuals amongst the crowd. Sometimes there are more troublesome people than other times. I think the ones that are being inattentive &/or annoying probably don't realize they are being a bad audience, THEY probably don't think about it at all.
It is the members of the audience around the hecklers that might realize "this audience sucks tonight", but since they were probably not the ones being annoying, it is not likely that they take responsibility for the actions of the crowd as a whole.
I know from experience that shooting a stern look at a hisser or a heckler generally has no effect what-so-ever. So, as we may be aware that the audience is under par on a particular night, we don't feel we have any control over it.

Too analytical?
